Superman 2025 Review: The Man of Steel Is Finally Fun Again

June 7, 2026June 7, 2026 by shreejan

James Gunn brings Superman back to the big screen — and this time, he actually smiles. Here’s everything you need to know before you watch.

What if Superman was just… a regular guy? A guy who cooks breakfast for his girlfriend, worries about what people think of him, and has a super-powered dog that absolutely refuses to behave?

That’s the Superman 2025 movie in a nutshell. Director James Gunn has rebooted one of the most famous superheroes in history. And this time, it feels fresh, fun, and — most importantly — human.

But is it actually any good? Let’s break it all down.

What Is the Superman 2025 Movie About?

Don’t worry — this film does NOT start with baby Superman being sent from the planet Krypton. We’ve all seen that story a hundred times. James Gunn skips it completely!

Instead, the story jumps straight in. Clark Kent (played by David Corenswet) has already been Superman for a few years. He works as a reporter at the Daily Planet in the city of Metropolis. He’s already dating Lois Lane (Rachel Brosnahan). And the whole world already knows Superman exists.

The trouble starts when Superman stops a war between two fictional countries. Some people love him for it. But others — including the sneaky billionaire Lex Luthor — want to destroy him.

Think of it like this: Imagine being the new kid at school who everyone is still figuring out. Some kids think you’re cool. Some kids are jealous. And one kid is secretly plotting to make your life a nightmare. That’s basically Superman’s problem in this movie!

The Good Stuff: What Makes Superman 2025 Great?

1. Superman Actually Feels Like a Real Person

In older Superman movies, the Man of Steel could seem too perfect. Too serious. Too boring. In this film, David Corenswet plays him like a real guy who happens to have superpowers.

There’s one scene where Clark comes home and cooks “breakfast for dinner” as a surprise for Lois. He thinks it’s her favourite. She tells him no — that’s his favourite. It’s a small, sweet, funny moment. And it shows exactly who this Superman is.

“He just wants what we all want — a job, friendships, and someone who understands him. He’s basically a regular guy with extraordinary powers.”— Film reviewer Erin Underwood

2. The Villain Is Genuinely Creepy

Nicholas Hoult plays Lex Luthor as a cold, calculating billionaire. He’s the kind of villain who smiles while doing terrible things. Hoult based his performance on a famous comic book version of Lex — and it shows.

Lex doesn’t just want to beat Superman in a fight. He wants to turn the whole world against him. That makes him much more dangerous than a villain who just punches things.

3. Krypto the Superdog Is the Star of the Movie

No, seriously. Krypto is hilarious. He has all of Superman’s powers — but none of the training. He bites things. He destroys stuff. He also somehow always shows up at exactly the right moment to save the day.

Almost every review of this movie mentions Krypto. Audiences absolutely love him.

4. It’s Colourful and Fun

Older DC movies were very dark and gloomy. This one is full of bright colours, funny moments, and a joyful energy. It feels more like the classic comic books.

“Superman 2025 feels like a return to what superheroes were always meant to be — something Marvel and DC have largely forgotten until now.”— Film reviewer, Medium

The Not-So-Good Stuff: Where Does It Fall Short?

No movie is perfect. Superman 2025 has a few problems too. Here’s what some people didn’t like:

  • The story is very busy — there are lots of characters and subplots happening at once
  • The movie drops you in the middle of Superman’s story with no introduction — some viewers felt lost at the start
  • The final battle gets a bit messy with too much CGI (computer-generated effects)
  • Some critics felt the film was too light and jokey for such a powerful character
  • A few supporting characters don’t get enough screen time to really shine

To be fair, most of these are minor complaints. The overall experience is still very enjoyable — especially for younger audiences.

The Pros and Cons: A Quick Summary

  • Brilliant casting — David Corenswet IS Superman
  • Krypto the dog is the funniest thing in any superhero movie this year
  • Colourful, fun, and optimistic — a refreshing change from dark DC movies
  • Nicholas Hoult’s Lex Luthor is genuinely unsettling and brilliant
  • Lois Lane (Rachel Brosnahan) is smart, funny, and strong
  • The plot is messy in places and tries to do too much
  • The CGI action in the final act gets a bit chaotic
  • Story drops you in the middle — no origin story to ease you in

Is Superman 2025 Suitable for Kids?

Yes — this movie is great for most kids and families! It has a PG-13 rating (suitable for ages 13+ in the US). There is action and some scary villain moments, but nothing too intense.

Younger kids (ages 8–12) will likely enjoy it too, especially the funny moments with Krypto the dog. Just be aware there are some action scenes where Superman gets seriously hurt.

Overall, this is a family-friendly superhero adventure that both kids and parents can enjoy together.

How Does It Compare to Old Superman Movies?

This is a brand-new version of Superman. James Gunn wanted to start completely fresh — so you don’t need to watch any old movies first.

But here’s a fun comparison:

  • The 1978 Superman with Christopher Reeve is still a classic — but this 2025 version is more modern and action-packed
  • The Zack Snyder DC movies (2013–2021) were very dark and serious — this film is the opposite: bright and hopeful
  • Fans of Marvel movies like the Guardians of the Galaxy will enjoy James Gunn’s style here — it has the same fun, colourful energy

In short: if you liked the dark, gloomy DC movies — this might feel too light. But if you want a Superman that actually makes you smile and cheer? This is your movie.

Our Final Verdict

The Superman 2025 movie review from most critics and fans lands in the same place: this is a really enjoyable, feel-good superhero film. It’s not perfect. The story gets a bit tangled in the middle. But the heart of it — a genuinely good man trying to do right in a complicated world — shines through every scene.

David Corenswet is a star. Krypto is a legend. And for the first time in a long time, Superman feels like a hero worth looking up to again.8/10Highly recommended — especially for superhero fans and families
